We were delighted by the number of people who signed up to become members at the inaugural meeting of the Hickling Broad U3A. You showed us that what we have started fulfils a yearning amongst retired and semi-retired people to share new learning experiences in a friendly environment. We now have fourteen interest groups formed by members: fishing, gardening, canoeing, food & wine, walking, crochet, patchwork & quilting, machine knitting, reading, card making, cycling, wildlife, photography and Tai Chi. There is also interest in forming a philosophy group and several more. Thank you to all the committee members and volunteers who worked so hard, and with good humour, to make this U3A happen.
At our monthly meeting in April we enjoyed a short talk by Sue Pilgrim, a lady toastmaster and celebrant. In May we listened to the former Captain of the Royal Yacht Britannia, Capt. ME Ortmans who had many a good tale to tell! On June 8 we have Jenny and John Hazel who will be discussing ‘life history work and reminiscence works’.
More talks coming up:
July 13 2pm-4pm Denise Burke: Find a good care service for a relative
Aug 10 2pm-4pm Nancy Oldfield Trust: Sailing and water activities for older/disabled people
Sept 7 2pm-4pm Kate Edwards: Cob building, traditional still used in 21st century

What is U3A? U3A runs adult learning groups for people who are no longer working. The idea is that retired people have a lifetime of experience and, collectively, a vast amount of knowledge. This is used to arrange a syllabus for each subject and meetings are normally led by a member of the group with specialist knowledge. A whole range of courses is available including subjects like creative writing, computing, art and many more. What makes U3A different from other Universities? NO special qualifications needed: all that is required is a desire to learn, to share knowledge and to enjoy the process. NO large fees: just a small subscription and a lot of volunteering of knowledge. NO exams: taking part is what it is all about. NO boring lectures: you can arrange a gardening group and nose around Hickling’s gardens; set up a watercolour group; try your hand at making a film; share your skills at baking exotic bread; research the history of the Broads; get up to speed on climate change; improve your driving; travel to explore saxon hoards; study dancing; read Trollope; put on a play…. NO long journeys: It is on your door-step at Hickling Barn but there are more than a dozen U3A branches in Norfolk. What are the objectives? The aims of U3A include demonstrating the benefits, enjoyment and new horizons to be discovered in learning throughout life. U3A also seeks to celebrate the capabilities and potential of older people and their value to society. How much does it cost? Each U3A group pays a small fee to the national coordinating body, and has access to a vast range of resources including a multi-media lending library. How do I find out more about U3A?
